Art was born in Port Huron, graduated from Port Huron High School in1958, Albion College in 1962, and Cincinnati College of Embalming in 1963. He is a third generation funeral director and has been a licensed since 1964. As a member of both the National Funeral Directors Assn. and Michigan Funeral Directors Assn, Art is a former MFDA board member.
Art is a member of Grace Episcopal Church, Kiwanis Club of Blue Water Area, (and former President) Port Huron Sports Hall of Fame board, Port Huron Golf Club, (former board member) Robinson Memorial Tennis Tournament committee, Blue Water Audubon, Michigan Seniors Golf Assn., St. Andrews Society of Detroit, and Clan Cochrane. He is a former member of the Port Huron Hospital Board, Salvation Army Advisory Board, St. Clair County Community College Foundation Board, and in 1972 was the recipient of the Port Huron Jaycees’ “Young Man of the Year” award.
Art’s interests include tennis, golf, running, and birding. He received three letters in tennis from both Port Huron High School and Albion College. He has the distinction of being the only participant who has played in every Francis Robinson Memorial Tennis Tournament since it’s inception in 1958. He played many years in the Port Huron Slo Ball League and has run hundreds of road races including six Detroit Free Press marathons and five Boston marathons.
In the 1980s and 1990s, Art co-owned and operated several Little Caesars Pizza stores, and in 1990, he received Little Caesars national “Marketeer of the Year” award.
Art lives in Port Huron with his wife of over 48 years, the former Susie Boerre. They have three children, Stephen Smith, Michael Smith, and Sarah Markovic, five grandchildren, Margaret, Robert, Casey, Carly, and Nicholas, and their current English Springer Spaniel, Molly.
