Sally Kay Hartom Sweet, age 78, of Kimball passed away on November 15, 2012. She was born November 5, 1934 in Battle Creek, Michigan, the youngest child of Robert and Mabel Hartom of Bellevue, Michigan. She grew up on the “Hartom Homestead”, in the village of Assyria Center north of Battle Creek. Her great-grandfather, Jacob Hartom purchased the land, 180 acres in 1860, the deed was signed by the President of The United States, Martin Van Buren. He then donated land for a church and a one room school house to the village. Sally Kay, her father, mother and siblings all attended the church and the school through the seventh grade. She was also active in 4H activities for several years.
While residing in Battle Creek, Sally held several secretarial jobs in several departments at the Kellogg Company, and was a medical secretary for the Boeing Aircraft Company manufacturing B-29 bomber parts during the Korean War.
Sally graduated in 1952 from Bellevue High School. She was on the cheer leading team, active in school plays for 4 years and served in the school office as a senior. Later while a resident in Indiana she attended Indiana University School of Interior Design and Architecture in Fort Wayne.
Sally and Bob lived in Port Huron from 1979 to 1991, they were active golf members of Black River Country Club during that period. In 1991 they moved to Palm Springs, California as Bob moved from the Times Herald as Advertising Director to the same position at The Desert Sun. As a free-lance writer Sally wrote a weekly column for The Desert Sun, and worked part-time for a fashion boutique. After retiring in 1993, they were active members of Monterey Country Club, and Habitat for Humanity. After enjoying the great desert weather, wonderful friendly people, along with numerous social activities for 11 years, they returned to Port Huron in 2002 to be near their growing families.
Sally is survived by her loving husband Robert. They were married for 60 years. Also surviving are 3 daughters, Robin (Chris) McGhee of Palm Bay, Florida, Suzan (Jim) Clevenger of Plymouth, Indiana, and Kimberlee (Don) Murray of Fort Gratiot, and grandchildren, Justin (Jennifer) Clevenger, Brandon (John Wright) Heckman, Tim (Danielle) Heckman, Nicholas (Christie) Sansom, Ashleigh and Kerri Lee Rider, Jordan Manuilow, Miranda (Tom Barbier) Sansom, Alexandria Moran, Isabella Murray, and great-grandchildren, Connor, Owen, Ada, Elliot, Destin, Kain, Addison, Cooper, Bo, Camron, Kara, Paige, Meretta, Molly, Max, Mia, Luca, and many nieces and nephews.
Sally was preceded in death by her parents, 3 brothers; Robert, Ralph, and Bruce Hartom and 2 sisters, Mary Lou Jones and Rosalee Beth Potter.
A funeral service will take place at 11 AM Monday in the Smith Family Funeral Home – North, 1525 Hancock Street with The Rev. Brad Morrison officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Hope Cemetery and her grandsons will be pallbearers. Visitation will also be on Monday beginning at 9 AM in the funeral home.
